Great Expectations, Vol III, Ch 1-3

Workng in groups of three or four, create a googledoc, list all group members names in it, and share it with my gmail address. Discuss the following questions and have a different member of the group record answers for each:
  • Find the area of these chapters where Pip makes an almost explicit allusion to Frankenstein. How does the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his creature relate to the Pip-Magwitch relationship? How are they similar and how different? How about Miss Havisham and Estella? Can you see any parallels between their connection and Pip’s with Magwitch, and what  does the Frankenstein framework highlight for each pair?
  • What do Pip as a very young boy and Magwitch as a very young boy have in common? Look for specfic details of Magwitch’s story of his youth and Pip’s telling of details of his childhood in the first chapter or so. Do any of their commonalities seem important?
  • What does Pip (and Herbert) understand about his “expectations” that Magwitch doesn’t? What difficult positions does this place Pip in?
